It was never released because it was thought by Nintendo that it would decrease sales of the Super Nintendo. Wow, that's quite an endorsement! The prototype was featured in an article of Nintendo Power. Its worth noting that releasing the game now as a feature in a Wii game or as Virtual Console download would do very little to hinder Super Nintendo sales, it might even boost them.
